Examiner Article: Why the True God Won't Heal Your Aunt PetuniaThe Full Article is too long to quote in full.
When it comes to Gnosticism, the question I get most besides ‘How could you be into this whack-job acid ideology?’ is ‘How come them Aeons don’t do nothing to help humanity if they’re greater than Jehovah…uh…uh…ah…gotcha!’
I usually think to myself:
You Hylic piece of #$%#! Don’t you see I’m completely enlightened and free…I am…where are my cigarettes?
But I end up answering the second question anyway because the first one would require one of us to drop acid.
You see, in the ‘know thyself’ aisle of the Gnosis supermarket, most people will fill their carts with inner inventory, forgetting one of the most important products: a new way of thinking. Before we can start understanding who we truly are we must accept that the very circuitry of our mind needs to be rewired. We’ve been conditioned to process information through borrowed lenses of glasses darkly. Our thinking has been wrong for a long time. Altering our perception is a main snack to fattening ourselves into snobby Pneumatics. Forget about the supermarket metaphor but keep thinking on the thinking thought I just put in your brain.
The point being that it is natural in the world which personifies its supreme force as 'Jehovah' to think along Jehovah's lines: God must be the supreme Power, the King of Kings, Ruler of the Universe, Pantocrator able to remove all evils at whim - or equally, to create them: a god ultimately of force and control.
But what if Power isn't the ultimate characteristic? What if that is only us trapped in the terms that lead us to see 'Jehovah' as that Ultimate Power (and ironically, for the more militant atheists to see him much more in that light of a being who should be constantly interfering if he existed)? There is a 'peace that passeth all understanding' beyond or 'above' Power. So go back to Auschwitz and tell them that! That's just the point: it 'passeth all understanding'. Anybody in contact with that Peace could be as happy in Auschwitz as anywhere else. Maybe they' be crazy. Maybe they would only look crazy. From 'normality' it can be hard to tell opposite extremes apart. "Madness to Greeks, a trap for Jews"
Jump to an entirely different field. 'The Wealth of Nations' concluded irrationally for the time, that true wealth did not lie under guard in a treasury but in productivity and trade. Even long after, a powerful nation meant a nations able to send a gunboat to impose its will. Nuclear weapons took that to an unworkable extreme. Where does worldly power reside today? More in multinational corporations than in nations. We're in a crisis: why? Is there a world war or an asteroid strike? Of a sort, but it is economic, intangible, something in fact that we created for ourselves and find ourselves in thrall to - perhaps Jehovah Lord of Armies is being replaced by Mammon Lord of Riches! The point is though, that even in the world we have created for ourselves, there are forces greater than brute strength Power.
If the 'God beyond gods' does not add up to anything tangible or comprehensible, it is because in expecting it to, we are taking anthopomorphism to a higher scale - one of quality rather than of appearance - but it is still anthropomorphism, it still operates in terms of qualities familiar to us. Yet the 'Peace of God' passeth all understanding, Nirvarna can only be hinted at in negative paradox: it is neither this nor its opposite, nor some combination, but something 'beyond', the Way that can be described is not the true Way. Any Ultimate that can be described and understood cannot be Ultimate, since what can understand it must be greater in perception in order to do so.
